There is no single yes-or-no answer to whether peptides are legal in Australia, it depends on the specific peptide and on what you are doing with it (importing, possessing, or supplying). Who regulates peptides in Australia?
Peptides intended to have an effect on the body are regulated as therapeutic goods by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), part of the federal Department of Health. The governing law is the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989.
The framework has two parts that matter most here:
- The Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 sets the rules for how therapeutic goods are approved, manufactured, imported and supplied.
- The Poisons Standard (the SUSMP) classifies substances into Schedules that determine how they can be accessed.
A substance that has not been entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) is generally an unapproved therapeutic good, which carries restrictions on import and supply.
Approved medicine vs unapproved good, why it matters
The single most important distinction is whether a peptide is a registered medicine or an unapproved good. They are treated completely differently under the law.

Crucially, the fact that a peptide can be bought from an overseas website does not make it an approved good, nor does it make importing or using it lawful. Most research peptides sold online fall into the unapproved category.
What do the Schedules (Schedule 4, Schedule 10) mean?
The Poisons Standard sorts substances into Schedules. Two are especially relevant to peptides: Schedule 4 (prescription only) and Schedule 10 (prohibited substances).
- Schedule 4 - Prescription Only Medicine. These substances require a prescription from an authorised health practitioner. Many therapeutic peptides, including the approved GLP-1 medicines, sit here.
- Schedule 10 - Substances of such danger to health as to warrant prohibition from sale, supply and use. A small number of substances are banned outright.
Some research peptides are not specifically scheduled by name, which does not make them “legal by default” - they can still be captured as unapproved therapeutic goods, and import/supply rules still apply. Scheduling can also change, so a substance’s status should always be checked against the current Poisons Standard.
Can you legally import peptides under the personal importation scheme?
The Personal Importation Scheme allows individuals to import certain therapeutic goods for personal use under specific conditions, but it is far narrower than it is often portrayed online, and it does not make everything legal.
Key conditions generally include:
- The goods are for personal use (or for an immediate family member), not for sale or supply.
- Quantity limits apply (commonly framed as up to a three-month supply at the recommended dose).
- For substances that are prescription-only (Schedule 4), a valid Australian prescription is generally still required.
- The goods must not be prohibited imports or otherwise restricted.
In practice, this means importing an unapproved research peptide is not automatically covered just because it is “for personal use”. The Australian Border Force and the TGA can seize non-compliant goods, and importing prescription-only substances without a prescription can have legal consequences.
Possession vs import vs supply, what’s the difference?
These three are separate legal questions, and a peptide’s situation can differ for each. Conflating them is one of the most common mistakes people make.
